Independent Living

E-mail Print PDF

Our Independent Living Program provides those services that most of us take for granted. Things like going to a doctor’s appointment, getting our hair done, grocery shopping, sorting through our mail or just having someone to talk with; things that seem so ordinary and every day yet are impossible for some people without a little help. It takes so little but means so much. The Power of One can be significant.

Remember, a neighbor’s independence depends on you!

Helping with the mail

Having someone come into your home once a week to help sort through the mail and pay those bills can mean the difference between keeping the telephone and electric service going or doing without. The effort on the volunteer is minimal but the feeling is grand.

Transportation

Our most in-demand service.  If you’re unable to get to your doctor’s appointments or go grocery shopping, staying independent is virtually impossible. Just a few hours a week can mean so much to someone who is no longer able to drive.

Telephone assurance calls

Help someone keep connected by simply calling them once or twice a week. Just knowing that someone takes an interest in who you are and what you’re doing can mean so much. There may be 30, 40 or even 50 years difference between you and your telephone friend but you’ll be amazed at how much you will have in common. Birthdays and holidays begin to have a special meaning again when you know there’s someone there that cares.

Grocery shopping

Grocery shopping is another seemingly mundane task that most of us take for granted. However, for someone who is home-bound grocery shopping can be insurmountable. Having someone willing to go grocery shopping from a list can mean the difference between living independently or being institutionalized. An outwardly simple act that requires so little time can be a life saver.

Group volunteering

Add your group to our list that includes the YMCA of the Suncoast, Progress Energy, Dixie Piling & Foundations, the City of Dunedin and the City of Largo. Our participants do yard work, wash windows, clean out storage sheds and even paint. No job is too big or too small; no effort level unappreciated.

Friendly visits

Can you spare an hour or so once a week or once every two weeks? If you could you would learn a great deal. You could learn about loving and caring. Almost all of our care receivers live alone, so a friendly smile can mean so much. You could learn about growing up in the 1920s or 30s. You could learn what it’s like to be disabled.

Additional services include

  • Light housekeeping
  • Light yard work
  • Occasional meal preparation
  • Respite care
  • Most non-medical assistance

All of our services are provided by volunteers. Their availability and abilities dictate the services we may provide and when we can provide them.
