In 2001 Faith in Action of Upper Pinellas started a program to distribute donated cell phones to the elderly and disabled citizens of Pinellas County. What started off slowly soon became a great success. FIAUP has distributed over 1,000 cell phones since.
The majority of the cell phones that FIAUP distributes are received from the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco – Pinellas, Inc., Senior Victim Advocate Program and the rest are donated by private individuals. All cell phones that are no longer in service can continue to be of value to needy individuals. By law cell phones that are no longer connected to a service must still be able to function as emergency (9-1-1) phones.
FIAUP distributes the cell phones the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 2:00 – 3:30 PM. All recipients are instructed on how to keep the phones charged and how to connect to the emergency service. Please call prior to coming by to ensure that we have enough phones available for everyone.
